Record sale of a whisky cask!
After selling one its casks for a record £16 million, Ardberg is donating £1 million to charities on Islay.
The sale price surpasses all previous cask records.
Distilled in 1975, “cask number three” is the oldest barrel that the distillery has released and 88 bottles will be produced from the cask over five years.
The article from the Scottish Field goes on to report that an Ardberg single malt from the 1970s is incredibly rare, due largely to them being sold for blending at the time.
Cask number three combines whiskies from a 1975 bourbon barrel and a 1975 oloroso sherry cask and created by Bill Lumsden – director of whisky creation at Ardbeg and its sister distillery, Glenmorangie.
With ‘nutty, herbal and smoky’ aromas and taste notes that boast ‘tar, espresso coffee and spearmint’. These complex flavours highlight the skill and expertise that goes into the creation of this one-of-a-kind whisky cask.
